- Prospective adoptive parents can be allowed to pick and choose the children. However, they can only accept or reject the child offered by the adoption body.
- No one can adopt an abandoned child with the clearance of the non-traceability of the child’s original parents.
- The consent of both spouses is required in adoption.
- A person can adopt irrespective of their marital status, even if he/she has a biological son or daughter.
- Couples having three or more children can’t be applicable for adoption except in the case of special needs children. However, the circumstances of hard to place children and adoption by step-parents can be entertained in adoption.
- Overseas citizens and foreign parents can also adopt children in India.
- Can a single individual adopt a child in India?
Yes, a single individual can adopt a child. There are some conditions,
- A single female can adopt a child of any gender.
- However, a single male can’t adopt a girl child.
- At what age should I adopt a child?
- The age difference between the child and the parents should be 25 years, which will be counted as per their date on the registration form. However, the accumulative age of the parents should be under 110.
- In the couple, the minimum age of either parent should be over 25 years.
- The minimum age for single parents to adopt a child should be 55 years, according to the new provisions of the Adoption Act.
- Why is adoption so expensive in India?
The Child Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) has decided to raise the adoption fees. It has raised from Rs 40,000 to Rs. 55,000. Earlier, adoptive parents spend Rs. 46,000, of which Rs. 24,000 goes for the acceptance of a child.
Further, Rs.16,000 goes for making the child legally theirs. The legal procedure includes the legal fees and money spent by childcare institutions (CCI) to keep the child. So, as of now, CARA has taken hold of it, which raises the fees for the adoption.
- Can you adopt a newborn in India?
No, a newborn child cannot be adopted, but the child declared legally free for adoption by the Child Welfare Committee under Juvenile Act, 2015 can be adopted.
